[Computer-go] Strange GNU Go ladder behavior

(Apologies if there's something in the output I should be able to
understand; my sysadmin skills are weak.)

Configure doesn't seem happy with that:

[drake at broadcast gnugo-3.8]$ ./configure --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu
"CFLAGS=-m32" "CXXFLAGS=-m32" "LDFLAGS=-m32"

checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c

checking whether build environment is sane... yes

checking for gawk... gawk

checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes

checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no

checking for gcc... gcc

checking for C compiler default output file name...

configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

See `config.log' for more details.

Here's config.log:

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while

running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by gnugo configure 3.8, which was

generated by GNU Autoconf 2.61. Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu CFLAGS=-m32 CXXFLAGS=-m32
LDFLAGS=-m32
