(Background: I've been thinking about the $5000 hardware limit for the
Shodan Go Bet (http://dcook.org/gobet/) and what it now buys.)

It seems a 12-core 3Ghz Intel machine could be put together for about $4000.

2 x 3Ghz 6-core xeons [0] for $3200 [1], $230 for motherboard [2], $220
for 12Gb memory [3]. Then say $350 for hard disk, case, etc.

+$250 for 3.3Ghz [4], -$1200 for 2.6Ghz [5], i.e. $2800.

Or going AMD, I found a 4-CPU motherboard [6] for $750, which could be
fitted with 4 x 6-core 2.2Ghz opterons [7] for $480 x 4. Wow, $3350 for
a 24-core 2.2Ghz machine? (Perhaps those opterons are only for single
CPU configurations?)

[0]: Need to go for xeons if you want dual-CPU; the i7 CPUs are only for
single-CPU machines.
