There was indeed a problem with level settings - I had hard coded the
level to 5000 simulations so it could be run somewhere without
hassle as a fixed anchor.
It's now playing at the true 1000 sim level and working fine. I can
see that the moves a slightly snappier as 5000 was enough to produce an
observable delay - not it plays instantly.
I also reset the K factor so that it would not be a free rating point
bonanza.
