Well, when it's open-source what is to stop anyone from simply taking  
the source and build the product elsewhere?

I'm sorry to hear that Chess-programmers have such a hard time making  
decent money from their efforts. I think Go programmers have had a  
much easier time. My software has pirate copies circulating in China,  
but still I made a decent amount from it. Well above the average  
salary of a computer-programmer in other fields.
