I agree. Many Faces of Go is a highly selective global tree searcher. It
has lots of explicit go knowledge. It's one of the strongest 19x19 go
programs. We can argue about how much explicit go knowledge must be
provided by the programmer, but I think any strong program will have both a
highly selective global search and a highly selective local tactical search
as part of the evaluation function.
