Not at all.  I am pretty sure that I also remember Kernighan & Ritchie
making an explicit point of saying that the value returned for logical
truth was implementation-dependent, and not a part of the C language per se.

Even so, I think that they were only being pedantic.  It's rather hard
to imagine why any implementation would return some value other than 1.
(Although, to be honest, my compiler-writing skills were limited to a
single undergrad course, so IANAE (I am not an expert).  YMMV.
