I've used this with good results (i.e. minor loss of result quality but
big drop in number of nodes needed). It can be extended so 5 libs are
needed for tactical life on first few ply, then 4 libs for a few ply,
and after that 3 libs (3 libs is alive == ladder search).
I think I borrowed this idea from GnuGo, though it might have been
mentioned on this list before then.
