Darren,

The Mozilla license, or it's latest incarnation in the Common
Development and Distribution License (CDDL), was designed
specifically to allow combining proprietary & open code. If you're
not familiar with it check out: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/
licensing/opensolaris_license/ or http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/
faq/licensing_faq/

However keep in mind that people putting code out under GPL/LGPL are
making a gift of it with the understanding that they will get to
share in any improvements others make to it. With BSD or CDDL you can
expand the library with proprietary extensions, but even with LGPL as
long as the custom code you write is outside of the library there
should be no problem keeping it private.
