Although this has been part of some heated discussions, my personal  
experiences have varied over time from C being 1.3 times as fast as  
Java, going up to 2 times as fast. Obviously it depends on a lot of  
details. And it depends on the current state-of-the-art of the  
compilers of each, they don't move in synch. Just for the ease of  
things I usually take it that Java will be half as slow as C, that  
way I'm pleasantly surprised more often than not. And I don't think  
it ever got worse than a factor 2 in a way that wasn't easily fixable.
